PPC lead quality: how to get fewer, better enquiries from Google Ads

If your Google Ads are generating lots of enquiries but they are the wrong type of customer, you do not have a lead volume problem. You have a lead quality problem. For UK businesses, improving lead quality usually comes down to three areas: targeting, messaging, and qualification.

Targeting is where you set the standard. Focus on high intent keywords, not vague research terms. “PPC agency UK” or “Google Ads management London” is usually higher intent than “Google advertising” or “what is PPC”. Use location targeting properly, especially if you only serve certain areas. Then use negative keywords to block irrelevant intent like jobs, training, free, and DIY.

Messaging is how you qualify before the click. Your ads and landing pages should make it clear who you are for. If you are premium, say it. If you specialise in certain sectors, mention it. If you only work with businesses above a certain size, you can hint at that with language like “for growing UK businesses” or “for established service companies”. Clear messaging reduces time wasters.

Qualification can happen on the landing page and the form. Add one or two questions that filter out poor fit leads, such as budget range, timeline, or service type. Keep it simple. The goal is not to create friction, it is to attract the right people and discourage the wrong ones.

Finally, track quality. If you can import offline conversions or mark qualified leads, you can train Google to find more of the right enquiries. Better lead quality is not luck. It is a system.
